So let's get some Cboaters down for the Russell Fork race this year, saturday October 1st. Who's coming, Alden? Craig? Joe (I can assure you there won't be any prize money, but beating a bunch of kayakers should be good enough)? Let's go git r done!

I am temporarily loosing my stern paddler, so I can't do the 40 miler on the Lumber that day. I was thinking of going back to the Gauley, but what's the Russell Fork Race? Where is it? What type of water? How long?

Russell Fork is a class 5 race on the eastern KY, western VA border. the race is maybe about 2 miles long, starting in the big pool a few hundred yard upstream of Towers. it ends at the base of Climax. in between are many classic class 4-5 rapids (Towers, Fist w/ deathtrap rock, Maze w/ car-size undercut, Triple Drop w/ endless hole at top, Dave's, El Horrendo, Walk the Plank, Foreplay, Climax. the course record is just under 10 minutes, and the best c-boat time was Andy Bridge (about 10:40 or so). it's one of the most exciting races in the country, trying to pull off the last boof at climax or threading though triple drop without being grabbed by an eddy, not to mention just escaping death at towers and fist. in the past decade, i can count on one hand the number of c-boaters that have raced (andy bridge, harry field, sam davis, yves narduzzi, myself, and of course paul the firestarter fantetti in his open boat) paul got his name by the enormous blazes that he builds at the rendezvous. we need more c-boaters there this year!
