Gauley Race Report

Well, I think yesterday saw the largest group of C1's ever for the 13th annual Upper Gauley Race. Jay Ditty, Bernie, Norwood Scott, K1er turned Slasher afficianado Jeremy Laucks and myself turned up for an awesome race. We started as a class and had (mostly) good lines down the river. I don't remember all the results or times, but Jay finished at 59:21. We should try to get 10 C1's out there next year. Alden, Joe, anyone else out there who likes to go fast, come on. Racing season has started. See ya'll at the Russell Fork next weekend?

oh god, I almost forgot...Eli won OC-1 and Milt took second. Milt thinks Eli cheated cause of his advanced bailing/beached whale technique but all I can say as he was hauling some major butt in his redneck camo-craft.

I met Eli on Friday. It was after all of the rapids & he let me try his "redneck camo-craft" or Spark if you prefer. Nice boat. Good speed & the most impressive eddyturns I've ever done in OC.

I definately saw eli get out of his boat above sweets to dump, so he wasn't always cheating.
If I never paddle a slasher again, I'll be ok with that

hey Will,
i take it you're getting geared up for the green narrows race??? i may come down this year, paddle in, and watch. I'd like to do some creeking with you again, but my schedule is booked this fall. one day i will get on the gauley and russell fork, ect. i once saw some video of a rapid called "Maze" on the russell fork and it looked awesome (minus the undercut). but for the time being i still have some unfinished work in New England - aka guidebook. it is sort of consuming all my focus now. but once that is out of the picture, things will change.

jeremy,
i take it youre the same guy who ran upper cherry with bobby this summer? i saw the pictures, it looked like a good time, although a bit low. i wonder if that river has been run in a c-1, most likely not and most likely it would involve some stepping up to the plate in c-1 (like really really hard).

I was under the impression that Norwood Scott has done it in a c-boat, but I could be wrong about that. I'd be pretty happy to be a lefty coming off cherry bomb

yeah seriously, being a lefty would be nice there . . . wish i was. every time i see that dam rapid on a video or in a photo (like all the time) i think about how i would do that and always draw a blank.
