Im like, OMG, I'm soooo stoked.
Just finalized on a Super Fun - now do I convert it to a C1 or do I take up kayaking? BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH... .just kidding..
Anyone out there have a Superfun C1?
So I'm looking at outfitting. Being the cheap @$$ that I am I'll be likely doin it myself. Will likely steal from all the outfitting ideas that I've seen/read about over the last year/two...I may even steal the materials - Gonzo won't notice that one of his 18 boats are missing the outfitting >:-D.
Just wondering about "Oil Canning"... Just figured out that Oil canning is where the hull kinda pops.. when outfitting a C1 is it something that is preventable by putting in a strong base? Or does it depend more on the quality of the boat?

msims,
what do you need a new boat for anyways, SINCE NOBODY EVER SEE YOU PADDLE ANY MORE!!!
And don't get any funny ideas, The Great Gonzo! knows every shim of foam in each of his boats and if you try to take any of it, bad river karma will haunt you FOREVER!!
bout the outfitting though, give Jamie Dors (www.paddlesportsrepairs.com) a call, his outfitting costs are, as far as I heard, extremely reasonable and it might be cheaper to let him do it than doing it yourself, especially if down the road you find out that it does not work and that you have to redo it.
in case you are interested, I have a complete dagger console that I ended up not using and that's available cheaply!

outfitting
In order to keep the weight to a minimum, I would suggest that you make your conversion out of minicell foam. If you have access to a kayak center rail, the thigh straps can be run under that and foam laid on the rail for stability. We have two c-1's using this system, so it will work.

Why don't you buy some foam and do it yourself? I have a Jackson Superstar converted as a C1. Took me about a day.
If I could work out how to insert a photo here I would show you a picture. Otherwise email me kjhughes@darlington.ac.uk

British rivers may be small, but they are perfectly formed!
Thinking of doing that.
Pix appreciated. I'll mail you.
My biggest concern is structural stability of the hull, especially under my knees. The super-fun is a wide boat, and it seems to be pretty thin (ie. flimsy?) - I'd guess it will be subject to some serious oil-canning if the outfitting is done incorrectly.
I'm thinking of lining the base w/ 3 mm abs, so some of my weight would actually hang from the cockpit (the abs would follow the shape of the hull..... but I'm challenged where to hang the front part of the abs to the hull given the shape of the boat.
Am I worried too much ? Would the pressure on my knees be sufficient to push out the shape of the hull? I don't think the centre support structure (ie. centre bar) would add much value where the knees go....
Thanks!
Mike.
