Simple Car Rack Solutions

Greetins:
On the drive to work this morning, I saw a very simple and cost effective solution to the alternative that I had persued. I have a Suburu Legend, which has an integral rack system as I bought it. However, it would only fit one boat, gunnels down or two on the side. Enough for the average weekend boater, but not for me. I purchased the Thule posts that attach to Suburu's rack and 5 1/2' spreaders. This easily transports two boats gunnels down or four on the side with additional C1's or dark side boats easily tied on. But it set me back a few. Previously, I was a die hard Quick N Easy man and only drove "gutter" cars, with humungous spreaders. The solution I saw was simply muffler clamps used to bolt hardwood spreaders to the existing rack system. I wish I thought of it before I dropped the bucks for a Thule. I could have bought a new paddle or used boat instead. Any other innovative designs out there?
