New (for me anyway) exercise for c boaters

Whille at the gym tonight I learned a new exercise.

You know those big balls, like huge beach balls; I think they are called stalilizer balls. Well you kneel on it and do exercise with a small medicine ball. It moves (cause it is round,,,,DUH) and you must stay balanced while doing your other stuff. It replicates the constant changes in balance that we experience when boating and strengthens you at the same time.

I have always scoffed at those new fangled gym devices but here is one that is working for me. Chris Kelly

My wife uses one as her computer chair. I'm pretty sure i saw a picture on Bob Foote's site where he was "kneeling" on one - that would be a sure way for me to break something...

I use one of the exercise balls for weight lifting, both kneeling and seated. Improves balance and core (interabdominal) strength. Essential for C-boating. Try doing curls when kneeling, you'll definitely want your helmet for the first few sets!

Chris, it's a great exercise! If you want to make it harder, you can also stand up on it. Another good thing: L-pose. Really helps balance and abs.
Ever tried slack-lining? Now that is fun!

Physio/stability balls definitely are great ways to work on improving balance. First time I saw someone kneeling on one of them was at a fitness conference in New York City back in 2001--and he was JUGGLING! Like "Keez" stated, you can do several "normal" exercises while kneeling on the ball and now those exercises become significantly harder as you are focusing on staying upright.

I strongly discourage standing on them because of the tremendous risk to yourself from losing your balance and falling (helmets do not help in this case :( ).

That said, I ENCOURAGE you to find different methods of resistance training while kneeling on them. Use cable machines and do: 1-arm rows; 2-hand rows; single arm chest presses; etc. You will HAVE to use much lighter weight in order to stay on the ball. :D
