The officials at the US National Whitewater Center recently informed us that it is unlikely that the Center will be open in time for the 2006 ACA Open Canoe Slalom National Championships on August 18-20.

Therefore, we have decided to move the event to the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City NC, about 3 hours from Charlotte. The dates of the Event will remain August 18-20.

The slalom race will be in the section of river below Nantahala Falls as the rafting traffic in the Falls would be prohibitive to us running the race. Wayne Dickert will still be the course designer. The race schedule is basically the same; however the dinner will most likely move to Saturday night.

If you have already sent in your registration you do not need to re-register. If you have sent in your registration and will be unable to attend, please let me know and we will re-fund your entry fee.

We would like to thank the Nantahala Outdoor Center, the US Forest Service, and the Nantahala Gorge Association for helping us to move our Nationals Event on short notice.

Message from Wayne Dickert:

Just a quick follow-up to Connie's message. As for the course, it will be on pushy class II ( I know that sounds like an oxymoron but you'll soon see). The course will be somewhat similar to what Jon did at last year's Nationals. It will be tight and technical with boat control being more important than power. There will also be a move similar to the wave move at the bottom of the course in Canada. However, the wave move here is in the middle of the course. If you "style it" you'll have a cup of water in your boat if not...bring a bailer!

For a mid-week break from the gates, I've lined up a van and trailer for a Chattooga Section IV trip. There is also a milder Section III option for those seeking less of a challenge

First .THANK you everyone for all the very hard work and worrying over this years nationals. There are a few issues though. Camping. The NOC stopped all camping yrs ago. The big Nantahala/ Lost Mine are totally full this time of year. Better make reservations somewhere soon!

I called Turkey Creek this morning & got a site. There are a lot of trees & most sites have a tent pad.

Smokey Mountain Meadows will not fill up. There were over 400 of us there for Week of Rivers & there was plenty of room left. Being back at Bryson City, it's a little farther from the race site. It's less wooded than Turkey Creek.

Each of the above campgrounds have three good showers on the men's side. I don't know how the women's side is at either place. Sites are flat at both places, but there is a little bit of a hill to climb to get to the bath house at Turkey Creek.

We are extending the date for late registration to August 4, 2006 for the 2006 ACA Open Canoe Slalom National Championships. We hope this additional time allows everyone to complete their travel arrangements for the new venue at the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Any registration postmarked after August 4, 2006 as well as on-site registration will need to include the late registration fee.
