Video Recording and Paddling Movies

Post by AJ »

The family decided to buy a Sony Mini-DV camcorder this year. So far, it has been a lot fun filming my kid's downhill mountain bike races and a few of our paddle adventures.

To inteface the Camcorder, I bought an IEEE-1394 card that came with ULead VideoStudio software, basic 7.0 edition. I soon learned that I needed to upgrade to the full blown 10 + version, if I wanted to burn DVDs.

A couple of things, have you ever seen a video of you paddling? Seeing myself paddle has really made me more aware of my mistakes and paddling technique. I am really looking forward to working on my game and see if I improve on next years recordings.

I am also curious if anyone uses VideoStudio or any other movie editing software? It has been a real challenge to learn VideoStudio. The program is a powerful editor; has very bad documentation; and little support. It is amazing how time flys when learning, editing and working with that software! I did find a users forum that has been great help to making this software work for me.

So now I have paddling strokes and video recording/editing skills to improve upon!

AJ,

I don't use VideoStudio but my day job is as a video editor. I have been recommending Pinnacle Studio version 10.5 lately when friends or family ask what they should use. None has come back and said, "What were you thinking?" Instead their comments have been just the opposite. One friend switched from VideoStudio and couldn't be happier.

It comes in several versions with different option levels, but all allow creating DVDs. The base version can be found for $50 so it's not a huge investment.

Hope this is useful info.

AJ,

If you want to get confused and frustrated, you should try Sony Vegas. I just picked up Ulead Videostudio 10+. I have made a couple short movies with it using multiple separate clips with editing, music, titles, transitions, etc and I have had no problems with it yet. I have been working with 30 second video clips downloaded from my Canon digital camera. I have not yet tried to capture video from my Panasonic digital VIDEO camera. I have also not tried to actually burn my projects to CD or DVD yet. If you would like some coaching, I'm happy to try to help. You can email me at markzimpfer@hotmail.com.
