2007 Open Boat Rodeo Nationals

Eli GhettoJohnny and myself have been discussing having an open boat rodeo nationals in 2007. I believe Esquif has told Eli that they would at least provide some type of sponsorship for the event.

Eli and I have also discussed having two classes for the event. An "Open Class" for the Cu-fly, salsa, spanish fly etc... And a "Traditional" or "Long boat" Class for Ocoees, Vipers, Nitros, Vertiges or whatever. We have also discussed having our own open boat judging instead of the same scoring that the kayaks use.

Our one big question is WHERE SHOULD WE HOLD THE EVENT? We've come up with hades Hole, Rock Island, and the Gauley as options but there are drawbacks to all 3. Our goal would be to have a hole that would be deep enough for open boat enders, forgiving enough that people wouldn't be afraid to come and at a location that people would be willing to drive to.

Anyone with any recomendations please feel free to post. We would like to have the event set at least 6 months ahead of time in order to be able to promote it and give people enough time to plan to come. We would like to get as many people to compete as possible and try to make it a fun layed back event (back to what open boat rodeos were like when they were on the ocoee back in the early 90's)

Maybe you have considered this but it might be worthwhile to have some novice or beginner classes.

I am thinking of how to attract more open boaters. You big dogs will look good and do well in the Nationals and lots of us like to watch you but maybe if there were more chances to compete at one's own level more folks might show up. The sponsors might like that too.

As to a place, it prolly must be in the Southeast or at least Mid Atlantic cause that's where the c-boater population is but between you and Eli, you prolly know all the best holes. Pick one that won't scare off less skilled folks but still give you a good ride.

Maybe a squirt component?

craig, I had forgotten the name of the greatest surf area(too many features to be called a wave) that I have been to until I saw the photo you posted, and remembered sturgeon. I went there this summer, and there were tons of features. but it was only at 35000 and thus none of the huge stuff was in. that was in june. apparently, last year they had a better aug-oct than the summer.
hope this gets going
Prost

Here's the original Sturgeon C-boats.net thread http://www.cboats.net/cforum/viewtopic. ... t=sturgeon there are a few pics, some links, etc. It was pretty high when we where there last summer (I think Aug). The place is worth the drive... FO SHO! :D
