Alternative Saturday (march 10) plan

I know I just posted regarding Clear Creek but then discovered the message included below from the nice ranger at the Tellico.

I could just as easily do the Tellico. It also has a wonderful moderate section.

I guess my preference is still for Clear Creek because it works so well for the group. Or, we could do Tellico on Saturday and Clear Creek on Sunday. The Tellico option depends on tellico water levels. Talk to me.

Here is the message:

Mike & Chris,
My name is Keith Lannom and I'm District Ranger on the Tellico Ranger
District, Cherokee NF. I'm also a kayaker and member of American
Whitewater. I saw the article in the Jan/Feb issue about the Tennessee
Canoe event. I want to share some info about an event we are hosting on
Saturday, March 10 in case the group happens to be on the Tellico that day.

Each March we host a river clean up day. Individuals and groups help us
clean the Tellico and North rivers by picking up trash along the stream
banks and roadsides. It is sponsored by Trout Unlimited, Southern 4-Wheel
Drive Association, TVA, and the Forest Service.

Last year the Atlanta Whitewater Club and Tennessee Valley Canoe Club came
out. If the river is running that day and the group decides to come to run
the Tellico, come a little early and give us a hand. Registration runs 8AM
to noon at the Ranger Station.

(See attached file: 07_Tellico_news_release_river_cleanup_.doc)

If you have questions you can call me or Mary Jane Burnette at
423-253-8400.

And if you do run the Tellico watch for strainers, the beavers have been
active on the middle Tellico run down close to the ranger station. There
is only one that crosses the whole river and if you go river right you can
slide over the top. The rest of the trees and limbs look like they can
easily avoided.

Thanks.
keith

Chris - I will most likely join u. I have run Tellico several times and have wanted to run Clear Creek.

Would also be willing to run something harder. But we can get into that later in the week.

I will have roon to shuttle myself and 3 others, + 2 more boats if need be.

How long you down for?

I will boat Friday, March 9 and stay until

Saturday March 17. On the 17th I hope to run the Cheoah at 600 cfs. Other then that I am up for anything within my ability level.

I also hope to put together a waterfall clinic if we can find some competant teachers for waterfalls. (I am not one.)

The Ranger talks about registration. Are there costs associated with running these rivers? What are your laws about trespass and property ownership along the river? Are you allowed to touch the river bed?

never heard of registration for rivers in TN

They're probably having people register if they help with the cleanup - makes it easier to document how many volunteer hours an event draws. We do that here with MTB trail building days - makes the politicos take a bit more notice when you can trot out stats of how many hundreds of hours of volunteer work a particular user group has invested in a location.
