My two-pump one battery setup has been working well. The info below is a bit dated so part numbers and prices may be off. I also found some parts (like a weather proof switch) from a marine boat store. The switch is the most likely point of failure. Seems that for every setup I've seen there are different methods for doing just about everything. I'll try to get some pictures with details posted soon. Here's a web site with more info, but I wouldn't recommend installing it under the saddle the way he did. I put them both in front of the saddle with thru-hulls a couple feet fore towards the bow, empties it down to a miniscule amount of water (not even enough to hand-pump).

16 gauge wire
slip-on connnectors (for the battery)
quick disconnects
liquid electrical tape (to seal solder connections)
glue stick for a hot glue gun (to waterproof the toggle switch)
