Brown Pack Systems Thigh Straps?

Hi, I'm the new guy, well really the old guy that's new to the forum. More intros later, but i was wondering if any of you folks were using the BPS quick release thigh straps that don't seem to be available anywhere anymore. They had cam buckles on each end for infinite adjustment of where the paddling went on your leg. the quick release loops were unique as well. Most of them seem to have ben sold in the Missouri and Kansas area.

Thanks, and glad to be a contributing member to the site from time to time. I've done my share of boat repairs too!

I've got a set that may be some of the last made. At the time, Dale was picking up stakes and moving (from MO?) to Maine. I never did see any more info online after that or heard of anybody getting a set. I keep moving mine from boat to boat hoping they don't wear out!

Somebody needs to start making them again...

I've got two sets that I treat like jewelry or a family heirloom or something. They are about eight years old and the springs in the cam buckles are working great. I agree with Scott that somebody needs to put them back out but they were $75 a pair back when.

I had a pair in an old dagger OC of mine that I sold. I should have removed them before I sold it. They worked well. Wish they were still made.

What's up Bullwinkle?

You might try to contact Steve Shepherd. He bought a set from Larry C. some time back but I don't know if he ever installed them in anything or not.

Also, there is a set in Roger H's Quake (my old boat) Actually, the boat belongs to his wife, but she MIGHT be interested in parting with them.

I'm sure you know how to get in touch with Steve and Roger.

On another note: it sure would be nice if you could join us at Surf and Turf (Rockport) one of these days. This year it will be held the last Saturday in July. Eli Helbert will be there and Don will host a party at OOO that evening. I know it's a long drive but keep it in mind.

Mr. Brown left MO under a cloud of suspiscion from what I heard. I know for a FACT he left MO with $300 of mine that was spozed to buy several sets of those thigh straps and I haven't seen them to this day. He apparently did home re-modeling on the side and took off with a $3000 deposit from one MWA member and reportedly never made good on that. No wonder there are no more straps! At one point, I kinda liked the guy.

I have been half tempted to modify his design by 10%(the precendent for not getting sued for copyright/design infringement) and market these straps. I have one pair that will go in my Outrage X, but would like to make many more pairs as these things really sell themselves. They won't be $75 a pair either. I couldn't sleep at night over-charging to that extent. I would offer a couple of different options for those that don't need the cam buckle on each end(especially C-1's). I've found a source for stainless steel cam buckles, but they get a little pricey. for those of you that have no clue what we're taling about, I'll try to post a photo of them in a day or two.

One way we can protest is to take an exacto knife and carefully cut the threads that hold his logo patch on them. Stay tuned for more little parlor tricks from the dimwittedmoose.

Mine are already modified - I didn't like how the 1" strap twisted and didn't need a cam buckle on each end, even in the open boat. I removed the cam at one end and stitched on a length of 2" tubular webbing - that is the end I secure to the "high anchor" in the boat.

I'm not sure that the design is patented (no sign of it) or if it could be due to "prior art". It's a "mil spec" release and folks have been using straps of similar sort for years. Let's get sewing guys...

I have an extra pair and promiosed to send them to Mister Bullwinkle but have not done so.

I am in Colorado until August 5 but Max, when I get home I'll send them.

BTW, I agree that they are the best thigh straps ever made.

But, I think that Scott's modification may be even better, esp as boats get smaller and as we tend to lower our attachment anchor points.

At long last, here's a decent photo of the BPS straps without their logos. Hope this helps.

Yo, Max, my man! Not sure Kim would want to change the outfitting in the boat!

Heck, I tried to buy it off her and it was no deal. Not even half share!

Let me know if you ever start making them.

We just had about two weeks of the Cossatot running nearly every day at doable levels with peaks at 9'!! :o You would have loved it!

I'm curious about the release mechanism- does anyone know where to get the hardware to put that set up together? Does that sort of buckle/clip set up have a name? I tried doing a bit of googling to try to find sources, but came up empty.
