Open Canoe Freestyle National Championships

Post by Dooleyoc-1 »

There is going to be an open boat class at the freestyle national championships this year on Sept 28 in McHenry Maryland. Check out the details here:

It would be great if we could get a decent open boat class together.

I know that Eli, Jeremy and I will be there so there will be at least 3 competitors. It would be awesome if we could get that number up to around 10.

GhettoJohnny, are you still around? You need to come out for this one.

I just talked to Zach, an up and coming open boater who is friends with Eli and I think he is going to compete so we're already up to 4 people.

Oh yeah- I've been helping to plan it, and there's also a boatercross on the schedule. The others who were helping to plan it were really interested in an OC-1 boatercross. The length limit for decked boats for the boatercross is 8'6", but I'm not sure that's a good length limit for canoecross. Any thoughts?

Set the length limit at 12 ft for the open boat class. Let's bring the big boats out for the boatercross.

of course if you set it short, you won't have to carry as many boats

That was the idea with the 8'6" limit for kayaks- that way people can race their creekboats, instead of hauling yet another boat around with them to race. It's pretty standard for boatercross races. The problem is, there just aren't that many oc-1 boats that come in close to that (Aftershock?). We could still go with that limit, and race in freestyle boats- (which is probably what I'll do anyway unless I can borrow something longer for the race), but that would exclude spanishflys. If we said 10', that would open it up to spanishflys, preludes, zooms, etc. The idea behind the length restriction is to run what you've got with you anyway. Thoughts?

It would be a waste of time to do a boatercross in boats shorter than a spanishfly. Cu-Flys and Salsa's would not be fun to race.
