Mad River Caption /saddle placement / outfitting ???

Post by Daf »

I bought a caption and have a blow molded mad river saddle I am going to put in to use this boat for solo. Where do I position the saddle. ie. How far from the stern of the boat to my back? As well, the old style plastic saddles ... do you block the thwarts down from the gunnels or leave the thwarts level with the gunnels and block the seat up to the thwart. The boat is 3.5 inches deeper than the seat top height. Any ideas?

I would block the seat up by glueing a sheet of minicell under the seat. This will allow a little flex in the hull when one blunders over rocks and ledges.

As for where to place the seat, I can't make a specific suggestion because I can't visualize your molded seat. In general, I would place a solo seat so that the boat is riding "level" or slightly bow up when you are kneeling with your torso up straight. When you lean forward to lay it on hard, the bow will drop a little for tracking. When you lean back, this will release the bow for turns. In a rockered boat like the Caption, you do not want the seat too far back of center.
