Just like to offically say hello

Post by cmnypny »

Some of you on this board already know me quite well from paddling together or my posts on another board.

For those of you that don't my name is Colin and I am an open boater (sounds like a AA meeting).

I love to take pictures of my fellow paddlers and write trip reports and share them with everyone.

I hope to meet alot of new paddlers during ALF 2008 and the ACA 2008 at the Gull River.

Since everything is pretty well frozen around me I have spent the last couple of days uploading my 2007 pictures to my Flickr account. I still have alot to go but if you have nothing to do and want to see the type of pictures I love to take and share you can see them here http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmnypny/sets/

If you want to know more about me personally then see my blog at http://cmnypny.blogspot.com/2007/02/my-bio.html

I really enjoy the positive feedback on questions you get on this forum. And yes I am still looking for a smaller solo boat ... Gonzo thinks I should not rule out the Zephyr.

This is me going through Rightside Phils Hole, Ottawa river. Must have been a saturday as that is my saturday paddling shirt. Sunday is a hawaiin and monday is my pirate outfit.

Hope to SYOTR and capture you with my camera lense.

hello

Thanks for the photos. I've run phils numerous times and I gotta say the right side would seem to be a little shallow being close to the island and all, how'd that work out for you? I've mostly run the middle line at phils, it's pretty scary fun. The ottawa is one heck of a river. I need to get back and paddle the ottawa it's been too long.

It gets a bit trashy at lower levels. I was 19 for 23 for making it thru Phils ... sometimes perfectly thru the center and sometimes off by a foot or so to the right. Once I ended up making the trip video for one of the rafting companys when I ended up in a bad side surf/washing machine roll and snapped my paddle blade.

For me it comes down to basic math ... is the foam pile and re-circulating crap behind the bottom of the trough less than the length of my boat. If so than I have a better chance of punching it if I make a mistake on my line. If not then there is the chance of becoming a washing machine and get sucked out of my boat if I blow it.

Even at really low water there is a fun sneak down the right side. I just realized I have some more pics to post up from October. I will try and do that over the next couple of days.

These pics will show the sneak on the right. I will link in a pic later on to show you.

The Ottawa is definitely a beautiful river. The Gatineau in Maniwaki, Quebec is very similiar in type without the crowds.

The rock to the left of the kayak in the picture above is inline with Phil's Hole. Phil's Hole is to the left of this rock.

Here is a link to the pics at the beginning of the run
