as i'm sitting in the eddy holding on to a tree branch next to our fave sidesurf spot i see/hear/feel something drop into my boat. as i'm trying to get out (with thigh straps and foot pegs still engaged) i see a tail swim under the air bag. turns out to be about a 30" water snake. swam from air bag to air bag till we finally dumped her. what a cool slice of life paddlin brings us!!!

You are supposed to roll that reptile out, and ask it back if it wants some more. I put that snake there. Fight Fight Fight

I whip into a eddy and bump a low hangin branch, plop 12" snake lands on air bag in front of me, in a milisecond I can see it ain't posin, still I annouance to 5 county "snake and give the snake the boat. I realize this ain't goin to sound good so I decide I'll take the boat back by washing the snake out of boat by flipin boat over. standing beside boat I reright the boat just to watch the butt end of snake go under front air bag. Roll the boat over again and take a safety break, spent rest of trip hopein it wasn't still under air bag. Two years later when I deflated the air bag, found a bunch of snake bones.
hmmm

Once upon a time, a long time ago, but not in the distant past. While fishing from my canoe, down on Lake Tuscaloosa, a couple of three or four snakes came floating by. They were rattle mouthed coral water-snakes. Which are not real poisonous, and are real tasty. Unfortunately for me they are real fast, even faster than them black racers. So I'm sitting there thinking about how to catch one or two. When all of sudden, one flips over on it's back. Oh boy, dinner! As I lower the boom with my paddle, two of em run up the dang thing and bite me under the arm. Like i said they're not real poisonous. So I reach under real slow, to pull them off. You know, so as to not get too excited. And dang two more bite me under the other arm. oh large steaming pile of dog doo, I died...but I win this story, cause there was four 36" snakes in my boat.

Scott and I were once playing at a ledge on the little river and I had the stupid notion that if I got out of my tandem flatwater boat and hopped in with him, that we could attain on that ledge and if not, it was a hot day and a swim would be fine. I pulled over to the bank, walked through the calf high grass, through a kneeling pad in the bow and we took off.
A moment later, Scott is wondering what I am saying and what I am doing sitting on the center thwart with my paddle inside the boat. A snake got knocked in the boat or something, and had crawled from behind me to in front of me between my legs...was literally sitting on my heels at the time. Pinned it to the floor with the paddle and applied massive force to the paddle until I managed to kill it and toss it out.
I think that is the closest I've come to being converted to a butt boater (the squealling like a girl and almost hopping back into Scott's lap being qualifying factors).
