Paddling Near Memphis, TN?

Is there any paddling near Memphis(other than the mighty Miss.), I may have to go there in the next month or so. I would be flying and wouldn't mind going out for a paddle. Any suggestions or folks that live in that area?

for whitewater there's nothing very close... nearest to my knowledge is Eastern Tennessee or North Alabama

Au contraire, my friend! If it rains in the right areas, we got lots of stuff in Arkansas.

I myself live about two hours from Memphis on the west side just inside the edge of the Ozarks. You would be welcome to crash here if you wanted to come this way.

Hi Roger,

Funny I was just looking for water today in the Ozarks.

I'm no where close but on a mission- to do some boating-would you give me a heads up when you plan a multi day multi river excursion

The spring river near Hardy Arkansas is almost always running it's class II/II+ and about two hours from downtown Memphis.It not very challenging but it is something. Also the seven point river north of the spring in Mo. its also a class II. Stay in the tourist areas in Memphis accept Graceland don't go near there!Crime is awful all over town but Graceland is in a really bad part of town.

Billcanoes, just watch the weather and the ozarkcreek pag. When that baby is a lotta of blue, it's time! Lot of the steep stuff fall into a few watersheds and so some of the hard-core guys (mostly yakers) get in maybe 2-3 different runs in a day. They get started early and finish late sometimes!

Last spring break (March), my wife and I got 4 days of paddling on three different streams.

Then, we's got some Buffalo National River (upper run Hailstone is a super III, but not in the commercial runs) which is mostly I-II and gets real calm in the last 60 miles or so. Lot of people do multi-day trips on that. Lot of good camping on sandbars with bluffs galore. Side hikes abound.

Check Memphiswhitewater.com for info. Not much WW around here, however there's a good group of paddlers to hook up with. Many of them also do trips on the Mississippi when nothing is running. While it may be flat, there's plenty of "pucker factor" to be had on the big muddy. Also, the Ozarks aren't far away and offer some great rain dependent paddling of all levels. Roger is definitley one of the guys in the know about the runs over there.
