Pretty cool. Saw this on youtube. Makes me wonder how many open boaters there are outside of North America?

Nice roll, too!

Kaz has taught a slalom clinic in Japan before; he might have an idea how popular open canoes are over there.

Yeah, there was a video of an open boat slalom race in japan on youtube too. I'd be curious to know how many people enter the races over there.

I know we have a few lurkers from Japan with a couple occasionally posting as well!
Now I wonder if an Pacific rim armada/alf event would be in order. ;-)

Count me in for the armada! Nihongo-ga wakarimas-ka?
There are many open canoe paddlers in Japan and all types of rivers to paddle.

In the early 90's we shipped as many container of canoes and butt boat to Japan as we did to Europe, from Dagger that is and we had quite a few Japaness vistor to the plant as well.

A few of them apparently got bored with slalom training and found playboating though buddy....?

Maybe you can bring a playboater on the next trip... and his wife and daughter... maybe his dog too.

There were Japanese guys at the World's rodeo on the Ottawa in 1997. But they did not like horseshoe...

Kon nichi wa

I think there are not so many single paddlers in Japan.
Feb 7, 2009 local slalom race was held in Mitake Valley
in Tokyo and participants were......
K1 : 25
OC1: only 2 (me and Taro)
Race Video is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_pGdtX1wI4
Paddling the blue RUMBA in the video was not me.
I rent my boat to a friend of mine Mr. Taro
who is Japan national team kayaker.
It was his first experience to paddle the OC1.
I tempted him to switch from yakker to single paddler. :D

In spite of serious depression, many OC1 paddlers in Japan
purchase new boat.
Kaz san exports lots of INFERNO to Japan.
Maybe single paddlers in Japan become increase ?

Both those youtube videos showed (I think) great looking paddles. Any ideas to what they were using for paddles?

They look to me like they are

I saw some kayaks as well from them in the vid.
