nantahala campground recomendations

hello all, I was looking for recommendations on campgrounds near the NOC. I stayed at 'lost mine campground" last trip, it was ok, but I was gonna see if anyone knew of anything better. Let me know what places y'all like. Thanks

I stayed at Turkey Creek last weekend, and agree that it's a very nice campground. I'll have to try Nelson's sometime.
I hope to get another weekend or two in before they shut off Oct 1.

I have only been there once, but I stayed at some campground about a mile from the NOC, up that tight hollow past the convenience store. It was nice and you could walk into town fairly easy if you decide to partake in beverages.

The one that opens earliest in the season and stays open latest is Tumbling Waters. They get lots of bike (motorized and other) traffic since they are so close to popular mountain bike and motorcycle rides. And they have a hilarious song on their website.
In fact, it is a great advertisement for the whole Nantahala region.

Yep, that's it! it wasn't to bad, we didn't have the greatest site, seemed like there are some choice sites stream-side. But I noticed this where you stayed last time.....

Lost Mine is great for the walking distance and Ann keeps it quiet - not great for partying, but great for kids. The group sites up the road (some streamside) are cool.
Turkey Creek is nice, though a little further out.
We used to camp along the Little Tennessee and on some roads up near the put in, but its been years since we did that - it's easier with young kids if you have amenities and a camp site you know will be there when you pull in at 10:00 pm...

Ohhhh, I like that Tumbling Waters ad!
Personally, I'd see if I could park overnight at the NOC and just hike a mile or two up the Appalachian Trail and camp for free in the woods. Heading South on the AT there's a REALLY great fire tower about 2 miles from the NOC and I believe a shelter not too far past it. But that's just me.

We went up for a Glacier Breaker one year and stayed in an AT shelter but I thought it was less than a mile south of the store - close enough that we went back for the cooler
