Minimum Pool Size?

What would be the minimum pool size one could
learn to roll a boat in? I saw a 15' * 12' * 42" free
standing pool that was affordable. Perhaps for a
C-1 one could use a short stout paddle like a
pizza paddle for learning the basics

Hey, Harry. I got to thinking about the free-standing pool that is available and think there might be a concern. Does free-standing mean that it is above ground? If so, I imagine there would be a great risk to hitting the side and rupturing the wall. :o

The upswing if that ever happens is that you have a chance to run a fast flowing creek in your own backyard. Definitely something worthy of posting on youtube. :D

Good luck with your venture,

KNeal

That would be fine for just rolling. Don't try cartwheels though :o

42" should be plenty deep. Sure, your paddle is probably longer than that, but in reality in a real roll situation you'll rarely have the luxury of a river even that deep... a roll with a good tuck and with the paddle kept parallel with the surface of the water should be able to be performed in very shallow water-- 42" should be more than enough for learning.

Great question.

We have an above-ground pool, and tried rolling a Cascade in it last summer.

The pool is circular -- the boat (around 11') barely fit, so the diameter of the pool must have been around 11' (duh-h).

Depth of the water was belly-button deep on a dumpy short-butt 5'7" guy. Me, actually. Lotsa depth for rolling.

Altogether, the scheme worked well.

Only problem -- you couldn't reach the 'edge' of the pool wit yer hands.

But nuthin's perfect.
