I have removed all of the old outfitting from my boat, a Dagger Genesis. How much of the old glue should I remove before glueing in the new outfitting?

What is the best way to remove the old glue? Light sanding? Light use of Acetone?

I'd probably use a sharp chisel held at a low angle. Careful about acetone. It isn't especially good for old contact cement or other cements, and if there are any microcracks where the seat was, you've got acetone working at the ABS and foam.

Actually according to Brian Shields who does the outfitting for Mike Yee up in my neck of the woods:

Take an old rag and thoroughly soak it in varsol.

Put in over the area of the boat with the old glue. Let it sit there overnight.

I used a 3 inch wide pastic scraper after that to take off the crap. It should come off pretty easy.

Afterwards clean the area well and wipe it down with isopropol alcohol.

I have doen this a couple times and it works for me.

Is varsol mineral spirits?

Neg Johnson on the chisel idea... thy last effort shall be to not damage the vinyl layer.

Remove the remaining adhesive with a rag dampened with paint thinner and leave overnight and use light pressure with a putty knife. The adhesive will roll off like a snot on your fingers- no personal experience with the snot, read it elsewhere... BT perhaps..?

I thought Varsol was outlawed?

I was in Lowes earlier tonight and couldnt find anything named Varsol. Heck none of the Crown brand even listed the active ingredients.

How will I know a specific substance is safe?

Varsol ... paint thinner ... mineral spirits ...what ever you want to call it

Just wondering if you're changing to a different outfitting scheme or redoing the same? As if the glue is stuck that good, do you really need to remove it? ....Simply wondering as you initially mentioned, how much do I need to remove.

Be cautious with the paint thinner. I removed the old outfitting from my R-Lite Rival; the line between turning old cement into snot and starting to soften the hull itself was too close for comfort.

I guess some people don't trust their skill with a chisel.

That's probably just as well. I don't want to hear about any paddlers stabbing themselves.....
