The post of the lost paddle (k style) got me to question...

Do folks mark there gear?

If so - how?

If not - why?

Silver sharpie marker to write on anything black.

Black sharpie marker to write on the rest.

I put my phone number and email address.

It works as I have been called for stuff I misplaced on the river.

Not a thing, but my gear is usually customized by me so it is easy to spot. The last thing I lost was a paddle and someone found it the next day and because of the river it was on they figured out it was mine (Conasauga, the good creek, not the so so river ain't run by many)

How about "yes, but only the cheap stuff".

My paddles and throw bags are all marked, but I don't think my boats are!

After the recent re-sale of a stolen boat out here, I'm going to make sure I've got all the serial numbers of my boats recorded (the boat's owner new his stolen boat was on Craigslist, but the police wouldn't get involved because he didn't know its serial number!).

On the other hand, there's so few ww canoes out here I'm sure my boats would find me.

And all my gear is recognizable by repairs, set-up, stickers, etc.

Pat.

Yes, I am broke and my wife already killed me once for spending the kind of money I did - don't want to die again.

I can tell how old something is by the phone number I marked. " Oh yeah, that was back when we lived at......" Of course that pre-dates the age of being able to take your phone # with you when you moved. That gives a clue to how old some of my stuff is!

It got me a jimi stick back one year later. The number had just about worn off but enough was left to phone home. Stick looked so good the guy who found it thought it was the same weekend it got lost. Actually it was exactly 51 weeks before! A sharpie is worth every penny!
