Canoeing in Turkey

I will visit Turkey this summer. I know there are rafting companies there. I am wondering where to paddle and if it is possible to rent an OC1 or a C1 somewhere. If somebody here know anything about paddling in Turkey, I would be interested to hear about it.

Thanks

Marc

There's some awesome paddling in Turkey. There's a lot of mountains over there and plenty of rivers to get on.

We went back in early summer 2008 and had a great time. We were in the South West of the country and we only just scratched the surface of the boating there.

There's a lot more to be had near the Coruh river to the North and there's also supposed to be some really good stuff up on the black sea coast.

There's some stuff on my blog from our trip. If you try and contact a guy called Dave Manby - he's a pretty well known Brit who is really clued up on Turkish boating. Try posting something on the UK Rivers Guidebook forum.

Where we were logistics would have been difficult without a driver / someone who speaks Turkish. We got that sorted through this company http://www.alternatifraft.com/ . I'm pretty sure they could handle logistics whether you wanted a fully guided trip or just a driver or whatever. I think they might also hire kayaks out. I've got a feeling you're going to struggle to find an OC1 or C1. I flew my boat out when we went......might be worth considering.

It's a place I'd go back to in an instant.

Anyway hope this helps

Cheers

Hi Marc,

Dave Manby is the man as Bob says. There is a guy called Birol who runs a campsite on the Coruh and can organise transport when you're there. I left my slightly cracked Prelude out there with him in 2007

I left it with no air bags though so it might not be of any use.

If you want any contact details I can try and dig them out, I know Birol is on facebook.

Thanks a lot for the informations. Since It is a family trip with my wife and my three kids and I am only bringing a backpack, I was only looking for a day or two of paddling.
From what I have seen on your links, there seem to be very nice rivers there. If I really want to paddle, I think I will have to get on the dark side  and rent a buttboat.

I paddled kopru
big volume rafting company's on put in most popular back then , best change to get your hands on boats as well.
manavgat. poor discriptions let to some kind of epic portage.
alara real nice long strange trip
dim cay do not bother
dalaman some rafting there as well. I think If I had only 1 day I would take this best mix of a change to get boating, easy-ish access and nice mix of paddling

if you end up on the kopru try to get you on the put in a few km above the rafting put in real nice gorge with roman bridge
