or, BoaterTalk will cast a wider net. Plus lots of patience. Any commercial shippping options will be very expensive if they take it on at all (esp. with bigger boats).

I just got my Fly delivered to asheville from the west coast.
It came UPS freight and it was pretty easy. You may need to have it sent from and to a business address (which is what I did, it came from a shop). Or you may be able to drop of and pick it up at a depot.
It cost 50 bucks.

good luck. I will be back in Asheville in April, lets go boating then.

Forward Air and Greyhound both work, but I would only ship plastic.

Hi J.Wood,
Could you please give specifics of your transaction? ...what class they designated your boat as, whether you crated it yourself or they did it or not at all...etc. Did you book through the 1-800 # or go to a local place?

I just got off the phone with ups and they quoted me ~$750 to ship a 9 1/2 foot canoe about the same distance (maybe less). How could it be THAT DIFFERENT???

Thanks a million!!!

to Everybody:

Anyone have ideas? DHL, Greyhound, and SportsExpress all said its too long to ship or they just didn't do that sort of thing. Cheapest I could find was ~$360.

A 40+ hour round trip road trip is not in the cards right now.

Thanks in advance and sorry for dragging up an old post.

Less than 8 foot it is considered as a regular crate and go.

Even just a 8 1/2 long gets a hades.

I shipped a 12.5 foot boat half way across the US for $175.00 using Forward Air, a few years ago. It was delivered to the sending terminal and it had to be picked up at the destination terminal. They would not pick-up or deliver to an address. It was worth it and not to inconvenient.

I don't know the details, but my Skeeter was delivered by UPS to my front porch (a few years ago). (9'4" long) I was charged less than $100 for shipping.

I'd ask at the desk (canoe in tow). I wonder if the "official" rules don't get bent sometimes?

Thanks Everyone. I called Forward Air and YRC. Got a quote of $97 for FA. YRC was a bit more, but that might be worth it if they handle boats more often...

And regarding UPS, I have a feeling that you are exactly right, Rich. Unfortunately I'm on the receiving end so I'm limited to phone calls. I did try a UPS store in Albuquerque but they didn't seem too interested in helping out. I doubt I'm going to get much better than the FA quote, though.

Thank you! Very Very Thank You, everybody!

I've shipped through Old Dominion Freight Lines. Same idea as the other shipping carriers. You may want to call them for a quote too, but I doubt it will be lower than $97.

A paddle shop (Appomattox River Company) in Virginia was able to ship a Prelude to me in Oregon Old Dominion for $150. I picked it up at the freight company's dock.
