Rolling a Mohawk Rodeo

Hi folks--I recently bought a used Mohawk Rodeo with the Mohawk factory outfitting (double lap strap, yakima foot braces).
It also has 2"x6" x 2ft long minicell foam strips glued on the inside, just below the gunnels in the middle of the boat.

I've noticed that this boat is really hard to get under when I go over on my off-side--which makes it hard to roll up, since I don't have an offside roll.
Also, it's much harder to roll than my Probe 12 or Outrage OC1s and my Dagger Atom C1.

I'm thinking that those 2"x6"x2ft foam strips may be making the boat more difficult to roll. So, maybe I should remove them? Or, learn an offside roll...

Any comments on this theory about the foam strips making the boat tough to roll?

my rodeo has cut down ends, so my input may not apply. but...i don't think the foam makes much difference. when you're gonna flip on your offside, you need to commit. really throw yourself into it, and if needed, use a little stroke to encourage the boat around. this assumes you're talking about a low brace roll. of course, if you had a video we could solve your problem easily.

As with any boat with foam side wall floatation you will have to "sink" the foam to get your roll started. Probably a bit easier to roll without the foam, but then you'll have more water in the boat when you come up

Are your bags sticking up above the gunnels? I had that problem before. It would sit on one side or the other of the bags rather than flat and on my offside I'd have to really reach and scull my way over to the other side to find the surface.

Do a sweep stroke under water or reach behind you on your offside with the paddle about 1 ft under water and stoke to the surface. This will pull the boat completely upside down so you can set up to roll.

With a little practice this can be done very quickly in a combat roll situation.

Thanks guys--I'll be taking the Rodeo down to the lake for more work on my offside roll. I think I'll go ahead and take out the foam side strips, just to see how much of a difference they're making.

Also, I was thinking of replacing the thwarts with ones that are 2" narrower. I'm use to my outrage which is much narrower than the Rodeo. Anyone else ever try this with a Rodeo?
