Detonator Repair....

I have some pretty glaring issues on the bottom of my boat that need to be addressed, assessed, and fixed by like...thursday morning.

i guess i'm addressing that now...so check. as for assessing... I have numerous cracks, in numerous spots..and they are 'wider' than a normal 'crack' you can see the inside layer of the boat... one of those cracks is more of a 'hole' than anything.

whats the best way to fix this quickly, and somewhat reliably for some hard days of boating.

I was thinking some dynel soaked with gflex.

Also... the abs is showing around the entire outside edge, how can i stop the UV exposure somewhat easily. Help is very much appreciated :)

cheap is best.

spray paint will keep the uv out.

for cracks i like gorilla glue, topped with a lego layer

I think im going to have to do more than that...the boat is not happy with me at all.

worse case maybe i throw epoxy in there or something i dunno. i'd like to layer it with something. I have stripps of kevlar laying around that I could use, but experience shows me that kevlar will wear very quickly on the bottom of the boat.

greybear just did the dynel and g-flex thing to a Viper 12. I paddled a friend's Rodeo this weekend that has a thick layer of g-flex thickened with powdered aluminum on the entire bottom of the boat. Seemed solid. I've used abs slurry (lego would be fine, I've used abs pipe) to cover the white ring around the double chines on Nitros. I've used abs sheet for larger areas. Works fine. But not by Thursday. For full-contact boating, I'd go plastic.

The thing to remeber about the Detonator I had similar issues with my Det that I used to have is that where the damage area was on the chine in the same spot that takes alot of the hits. The gflex once dried, flexs and can take hits better. The first repair was with two part epoxy and kevlar. Not much flex and broke the patch. I haven.t tried out gflex repair the viper12 yet but I used the gflex one my prophet and it is holding very well. The dynel seems like it works very well with the gflex and it is cheaper than kevlar.

I have the same cracks on my deto, one on each side of the hull. What I did was open them enough to fill the space between plastic and foam with liquid epoxy. I previously let it dry for some days. Finalle, I mixed epoxy with pure silice (don't know what's the word in english) so it would get thicker, and sealed the cracks. So far it has held good enough to run many rocky rapids with solid impacts.

Hard to guess the extent of the damage from your post, but...

if the outside isn't gouged and delaminating, just missing the vinyl layer, just repaint, keep it simple. But not before Thursday or it'll all just come right off, but when you've got some time for it to dry.

if it's the inside is cracked and you need a quickie repair, I'd just stop-drill, clean/widen the cracks, and fill with Aquaseal or Goop - easy, cheap, flexible and transparent. But doesn't add structural support if it's really busted up. Eventually you may need to put down a sheet of ABS inside or G-flex something, but probably not before Thursday.

Dynel and Gflex it is. Then perhaps... if anyone wants to trade a Detonator, ME, and XL13, for something plastic... that sounds good to me.

Otherwise, the boat won't make it through the fall. She deserves someone that isn't going to run her to the ground every weekend

sounds like that boat is ready to retire. Slap some duct tape on it! Save the money that you'll waste on g-flex and start saving for a new boat. I hear there's a real nice new design out there.

.... you can see how 5 days of that tore that boat up...

The ABS pipe

soaked in acetone works well for the outside of the boat.....if delaminating listen to the others for what to do with the inside....
You buy ABS plastic pipe (black at lowe's) cut into chunks, and when the consistency is right, smear it on. Let it dry (pretty fast drying)...but it worked for my old detonator...now in somebody's back yard...probably a planter... who knows.
