Mohawk double thigh strap

Post by ELGOTTO »

I have a double thigh strap that both straps have come unglued from the foam. What kind of glue and prep would you use to fix it? It looks like it might have been regular contact glue initially.

I've had better luck with G-Flex than contact cement, but clean the heck out of the surfaces before you stick it back on. Take your time... the solvents that clean up old contact adhesive also delaminate vinyl from Royalex.

Actually it isn't on the vinyl. It is where the red and black strap glues to the foam lap belt.

Then, it probably was contact cement - and that probably means WELDWOOD IN THE RED CAN!

Shoo Goo would probably work too.

For me; boating brings me closer to to something divine, and in a open canoe I'm 8 Inches closer.

glue

Another vote for Weldwood.
Double coat the foam and the straps, letting them dry to the touch between coats. You can use a hair dryer or heat gun to accelerate the dry time. Just be careful.

It should stay put for quite awhile.

The red can will work great.
I used it for the very same thing and still going strong; 3plus years.

I've had Shoe Goo go stiff and brittle with age. Marine Goop might be different.

I would first bend and flex the foam to see if the surface is beset by cracks or is breaking down. Then I would sand the surface to remove enough of the top layer to get to the better stuff.

My preference for a glue would be Aquaseal because it is tough and remains flexible. But contact cement might be OK too. It is probably important to have the foam and the strap in approximately the same contour as when they are in use, whether one is waiting for Aquaseal to dry or one is slapping the straps and foam together with contact cement.
