I just run it. If I smash it, I'm happy. If I stay dry, I'm happy. If I swim, I'm not so happy, but it doesn't ruin the day. Maybe with more experience I'll look for the dry lines.

gnarls what your missing is becoming a stronger paddler in general, is your getting swamped too much slow down, if your not getting swamped enuf, roll :)

Whether I go for the dry or wet line depends on a variety of factors :

* temp
* how long the rapid is and how close I am to the end of it - any tough moves that being swamped will affect?
* how long the river is and how much time/energy I want to devote to muscling a swamped boat around
* how much fun I might have on either line (challenge of the dry line vs. the splash)
* mood
* how I am dressed and what happens next - sometimes its convenient to hop out dry and go straight to dinner...
