Shohola Falls Slideshow of OpenCanoe run

Anyone thinking about running Shohola Falls in PA.... I highly recommend it. It's a blast. Just a burly slide, that boats great. Especially in an open boat.

When we got done, due to ice on the cliffs of the walk-out...Wayne and I were forced to run the stacked class IV gorge, that I felt was harder than the UY. After about 150yards of 'running it live', I flipped going over a pour-over, had to roll against a cliff wall, and finish the next 1/4 mile of constant rapids in with a boat full of water... oh yeah, and it was 20 degrees outside... What a day.

My buddy Andrew Ludke put up the fantasic pictures from that day on his website ...along with the repair job, to get us back out on the water...

http://www.nyarts.net/ - scroll down a short ways, and you'll see an unmistakable picture in an open boat. - Thanks Andrew for all the help this weekend.

Thanks guys. Andrew did an incredible job shooting for the falls and Gorge on a day that the trails and cliffsides were extremely icy.

I think the canoe in the gorge looks awesome from birds eye view.

Very nicely done. I bet it took your breath when your friend in the K1 went under the ledge. The paddle out looked pretty impressive too.
It looks like the Detonator is about broke in....

Bill that's the little known White Room line.... if Tommy had manned up he would have followed me into the darkness to fly out the curtain.

If I had smoothed it better I wouldn't have paused on the slab to "pull in" to the white room.

Sweet line, did the first person to do it seek it out, or did some poor soul blunder in there only to wash out and go " Wow! That was cool?

I'm sure canoes and kayaks have been dropping the 70 foot slide at shahola for decades now. I assume the origin of the white room is lost to time but I could ask the guy that first told me about it back in 2002. I'm pretty happy with the photos. I've never actually seen any photos of anyone doing the white room line till these. Other than my buddy and myself I dont' know of anyone that's running that line recently, but I'm sure it will increase now.

Dennis it REALLY is the coolest line I can think of. It is possible to blunder into the line by a freak mistake i guess. The Entry is VERY difficult to pin point once you are on the water. It is easy to get backwards or sideways and fly off the front of the whole rock face.

Thanks Wayne,

After looking at the pics again it is a very committing line. It looks like the place where you would wash over the big drop if you blow the entry would land right on the rocks.

Maybe next time you can get video.

Wicked line! Respect

I've had video for years now but I've resisted releasing it for a couple reasons. Mostly because I know Video Scouters are going to get distroyed hucking it. I've been talking to tom about including some of my huge inventory of video (like this) into FullGnarlz...he's actually for it but I'm resistant. I tend to like a Canoe movie with 99.9% canoes.

BTW- I was well on the most of difficult entry lines for the move so I don't suggest anyone template directly off of that especially for a first try. Water level is extremely critical. I think the canoe first descent is still available :o
