Wood gunnels on PE boats

Do you have to loosen the gunnels in the winter on polyethylene boats like you do on royalex? I just bought a ledge and I don't want any cold cracks.
The wood is going to expand/contract at a different rate than the plastic either way. In fact, I would assume Royalex is the most temperature stable of the three, since it is a sandwich of several different materials. I would loosen the gunwales to be safe.
