Otter creek is a federally designated wilderness area, meaning no motorized or mechanized equipment is allowed. Think of carrying your boat out as training for some of the more fullgnarlz hike-to runs you'll be doing in the future... or punishment for screwing up.

Good luck with hiking it out of there. I've been lucky and my worst walk was a mile after a friend of mine pinned my cascade (went back after the water dropped to get it).

Thank you all, too, for keeping it positive for the most part. I'm sure if y'all want to get in to it there will be a lively discussion over at the FullGnarlz.com site (link to be added to Paddling links tonight... hopefully. The past 7 days has been ridiculous).
Keep the C!

I don't care who you are . . . those high mountain runs in the Dolly Sods and the Cheat headwaters are committing! A lot of good boaters have had to drag their arses out of there in the dark or wait it out until morning.

Tommy, nice to see you back here posting.

Typical boaters... sleeping in late... mooching a ride... putting on around "late-o-clock"... blah blah blah.

Why not put on around 9:00 in the morning? There's a run up here called the Presque Isle that if you plan to do the entire run (M28 or from Stiegers)... you'd best be up and on the water early... and yes... no matter what the level and time of year it is it's always a +1 rating on the scale due to it's remoteness. It's a very special run... but it takes a special commitment to do it properly and with the right people. There's more than a few tales of long cold walks off this river... and we lost one of the pioneers of the region Jim Rada on this very river that he called "home".

I'm sure everyone has a run something like this... but frankly I don't get the "let's chance it attitude" some seem to have... never will.

I had an impromptu overnighter with a 200 foot climb followed by a six mile walk out in BC in November a couple of years ago after losing my boat on a flood stage run. I never got the boat back. Driving home without a boat on the roof sucks!

I am glad you are ok, and it is good to have you back. Good luck recovering the boat.

glad to hear that you got the boat back. by the sounds of it you fell into a classic heuristic trap when you put on the river that day (done it myself and it may happen to me again). It;s good to know what the classic heuristic traps are, theyn they can be taken in consideration during the decision making process:

http://www.snowpit.com/articles/traps%20reprint.pdf
http://pistehors.com/backcountry/wiki/A ... stic-Traps

The studies have been done on avalanche accidents, but the conclusions concerning the decision making process apply to paddling as well.

TGG!
