Aint Louie Fest - 2012 - March 10-18

Post by Yukon »

What are the dates this year? Which cities would be best to fly to from the West Coast? Atlanta? Nashville? I have no idea of the lay of the land down there. Looking at Logistics to get there

Knoxville would be closest. Or you can probly go to Atlanta and rent a car to drive north. But what do I know, I'm a yankee:)

Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Knoxville should all be doable. You will probably be able to get someone to pick you up and even avoid the need to rent a car. If you are planning on flying in a boat, both Atlanta and Knoxville are major airports, so you should be able to fly on a plane large enough to check a canoe without toooo much effort.

Hope this helps,

Dates are March 10-18.

I live south of Atlanta - if you flew into ATL, it is about a 3.5 hour drive from the airport to Lenoir City, TN. If you flew into Knoxville, you'd probably have to connect through ATL...you'd have to weigh the price difference between taking the connecting flight and renting a car and driving.

The ALF dates are the same as our March Break from school in Ontario, which puts the dates from March 12-20th.

I also can't speak for any locals, but I am betting you could get a boat to paddle from one of them.

Checkout the Walden's Ridge site or the GDI facebook page for info as well.

Gord - I said March 10-18 in an earlier post as the first and last weekends are usually the busiest... I'm pretty sure the Ontario March break ends on March 18. That is what's on the school calendars.

The break does end on Friday the 18th. The 20th is the Sunday of the last weekend ALF would run.

Anyway, I am already looking forward to boating with everyone again at ALF.

Gord, I think you are looking at 2011. March 18, 2012 is a Sunday.

My mistake, I was looking at last year's school calendar.

It is from the 10th to the 18th. Sorry for causing any confusion. :-?

Who sets the alf dates? Does Louie just pass it down the grapevine until someone else PMs Cboats?

ALF dates, a history lesson

By tradition, the dates are set by the Ottawa, Ontario Public School board. Seriously. This whole thing started many years ago before it was called ALF by a small group of paddlers from Ottawa traveling down for creeking and visiting the Dagger factory back when they still made open boats. These guys went during the "March break", which was dictated by the school board. They've been going ever since, and one year Louie decided to let the boating community join in.

That's been how the dates get set. In the summer you can find out next year's dates by a google search for "Ottawa Public School Board calendar" and you'll find the March break dates.
