Departure

Post by thomsonbytheriver »

Hi guys,

I just thought I'd answer a question; I noticed on the museum page a question about what version of the Departure was noted in the picture. That was the Departure 2. The Departure was the same basic hull, but had much lower sides and about 3 inches of tumblehome.

Here's a link to some more pics of the Departure and the Air for those who are interested:

Those are cool looking boats for sure, always thought that but never seen one up close. I will be in the Ottawa valley for 2 weeks in August and would love to try one out and paddle with you and Paul Danks. My son Pelly (12) would also be very keen to try one and learn some things from you guys.

IIRC (and Ian can confirm or deny) Murky Water still has the molds....

One of these days I would like one as well - there are one or two in the southeast I believe that changed hands in the past few years (can't believe I missed out on them!)

Mick,

I think you're just jealous of Danks' (alias: Groove Dog) chest and head hair.

To answer a few questions:

There were only 2 Departure 1's ever made- the version was essentially a prototype. A carbon / carbon kevlar boat was paddled by Corran Addison at the Rodeo World's in Augsberg. I brought that boat back and cleaned 12 inches off of stern and bow doing a cartwheel in left side Horseshoe on the Ottawa. That was by far the fastest boat modification I've ever done! The other was a tougher glass boat which I paddled for awhile, then decked it over to convert it to a kid's kayak for my nephew. It still gets daily use by my 7 year old son, although now he prefers a new open boat I made for him which he named the Electro.

There were a dozen or so Departure 2's made. They are awesome surfing boats. It's such a cool feeling blasting a hole in an open boat. The foam pile just bounces around on your legs as you shred the bottom of the hole back and forth. It's a very intimate encounter with the river which I recommend highly. I still have a red metal flake Departure 2 which I paddle every year. It now needs new gunwales.

Ed from Murky Water still has the mold for the Air and the Departure- not to mention the Groove. I'm kitting myself out with a new Groove for this Spring as a matter of fact.
