POV of Russell Fork at 700 cfs. Pushy and tight. Steve Earle soundtrack.

Sweet vid! Was that the "scary ferry" at about 1:46 or so? Looks to me like you styled it. Great job, looks like heaps of fun. The kind of boating I'd like to get into someday soon!

Thanks Tommy-it would be cool if we could get a run on it at ALF. 700 pretty pushy, and the C1-er in the video is pretty familiar with the run and says 500 is his favorite. Either way, it's a good one, and Fist can be avoided with no trouble.

"Scary Ferry" is at 1:08 or so; you can see that the majority of the flow is pushing directly into a crack in the large boulder, where the water has carved out what has been described to me as a tunnel of sorts under the boulder (and under water). Jim Michaud has written a story on AW about getting pushed under there and crawling out. It is possible to run it direct, but a boulder has moved in recent years and thinned out the line by reducing the room you have to work right away from the crack.

1:46 is in "Maze" rapid, which is a busy eddy hop around sieves and undercuts. The move at 1:46 is above a major undercut that forms a "bridge" at very low water.

This is the only time I have run the Russell Fork at this level; it has the reputation of being somewhat more difficult than the fall release (800-1000 cfs) because the lines are quite thin, the gradient is all there, and there is plenty of water for stompy holes and lots of push. The hole in the second drop of triple drop (2:21) has to be punched pretty aggresively. I guess you could pinch either side, but the hole occupies most of the slot between the rocks!
