Giddyup!

Post by thomsonbytheriver »

It's -40 C with the windchill in Ottawa. The eddies are filled with slushy frazil ice and mist is wisked away from the waters surface by a stiff frigid breeze. The paradox of a cloudless sunny sky and the coldest day in 8 years makes the rapids next to me both appealing and repellant. Today there is no apparent promise for a return to the soupy waves of summertime. So...

Boating anyone?

If I remember correctly didn't the Great Gonzo go out night surfing in his groove in weather like this a while back. But then he wised up and is in Costa Rica right now.

You can dress for the cold but I once nearly lost it trying to eddy out because my paddle shaft had iced up and when I did a cross stroke (choked up on the shaft) my shaft hand slid to meet the grip hand and paddling with both hands at the top of a paddle is not very efficient nor effective!

A picture says a thousand words... and this puts it into perspective for our Fahrenheit brethren in the South:

thats not too bad getting down there. I have my sled dogs at temp. colder than that thermometer reads. Things get special at -40 and colder, it has an effect on many things - like propane gas turns to liquid. Makes for good stories but poor paddling

Yukon Cornelius... Poor doggies.

I guess the 24 hour darkness brings on enough cabin fever that the cold no longer matters.

Hey- can you paddle on liquid propane?- might be an 'Option' (get it) for you!
