On June 21, 2014, the United States Canoe Association's National Stock Aluminum Canoe/Downriver Kayak Marathon Championships will be held in western North Carolina. The course will be eighteen (18) miles on the French Broad River in Henderson County, with the finish line near the town of Fletcher. It is the same course that is used for the first day of the annual French Broad Classique.

This stretch is a terrific venue for canoe and kayak racing. The course has good views of Pisgah National Forest, but is nonetheless easily accessible. Five (5) highway bridges cross the course between the start and finish, allowing ample opportunities for spectators. The location is very accessible. This area of North Carolina is actually farther west than Cleveland and easy to get to on Interstates 40 and 26. The Asheville Regional Airport is within sight of the finish line.

In addition, the American Canoe Association's (ACA) Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver (WWOCD) National Championships are being held on the nearby Nantahala River just a couple of days before these Nationals. The driving time between the two events is only about an hour and a half. Racing in both is not only possible, it is highly encouraged!
