Help….pump needs Viagra!

No, the one in my L'Edge.

I have a single Tsunami 1200 pump and a 5 amp lead acid battery installed by the previous owner. The outlet hose is probably 18 inches long and goes to an inline fitting through the hull that is a little forward of where it needs to be. It took a full five minutes to clear the boat after I rolled up yesterday, with the battery fully charged

My buddy has same Tsunami 1200 pump only two of them powered by a 3.5 amp battery that shoots out both sides water like a park fountain. Any pointers on how I can get mine working faster? I have already checked to make sure the float bags are not interfering and was thinking of shortening the outlet hose:cry:

what gauge wire are you using? you may need to increase your wire size to increase ampacity. also check your switch and termination points to make sure they are not gaulded or corroded reducing current flow. that's my guess

I found that the discharge hose diameter makes a big difference. Use 1 1/8" diameter smooth wall hose.

Is the pump wired correctly? If you have the polarity reversed it'll still pump but SLOWLY.

Brown = Positive
Black = Negitive

What arhdc said. fill it up with water and switch the leads on your battery.

Oh yeah, DC motor reverses with reverse polarity, but impeller blades are angled to work in one direction only....

I was really puzzling over that because the capacity of the battery shouldn't make a difference and although cable size/resistance will, the difference described would have required phone cable or something :)

Also, what was said about smooth tubes helps. Those flexible corrugated plastic tubes give a lot of flow resistance.

Some where, some time the idea that small pumps lose 10% efficiency for each foot of rise, add in corrugated friction, and the accumulated distance/length of hose, battery's age/ability to attain & hold a charge; in the end a small inexpensive pump needs all the breaks it can get to meet specs. Without wiring backwards.

lead acids have a 5 year average lifespan due too chemical breakdown. it will state a voltage but may have no amperage behind it. i run 2 pumps and it wqill empty in less than 2 minutes.

Thank you all for your replies and advice. I will use these to troubleshoot the situation. I can rule out reversed polarity and battery age, so it must be a wiring and/or hose issues.

Happy Paddling!

Along with V x A = P is... I x Q = ?
I have several boats, pumps, and batteries. after reading this article I checked my battery leads to flat pins and sure enough one of them had been reversed.

(How did I charge it? With small alligator clips and not much curiosity)

"You are right, I'm wrong, you are fired"

2nd pump being installed as we text. The battery is 90% of the weight, a second pump is small change.
Thnks.
