Okay... Good to know the options there. I will definitely have to re-read this whole thread and make some notes for myself on things to try next time there is a pool session. In addition to trying to bomb-proof my roll, I want to be able to teach others. So it's good for me to have lots of different concepts and modifications in my back pocket.
Thanks all!

I had a chance to go to another roll session this morning. I tried to incorporate the feedback I got, including not using a PFD and more camera angles...

Kelvin, maybe I misunderstood which direction you were suggesting. I definitely felt "looser" when I let my torso swing more towards the stern of the boat. I did also think about consciously trying to draw my body up towards the surface.
Smurfwarrior, I'm still fiddling with my shaft hand! Apparently that really is a bad habit I need to work on.
I think you can see in some of the farther away shots about how deep my blade ends up in the water... I'm nervous that could lead to another flip in seriously squirrelly water.
Anyone have suggestions about excercises to work on the hip-flick? I tried using some hand-paddles today, but without a PFD it ended poorly. (I ruptured an eardrum on that attempt, so I'm done practicing for a few weeks anyway...)
Thanks,
Shep

A few things that are good help when practising the hip flick are to just hang on the side of the pool and try to flick up with as little help from the edge as possible. From their move to flutter boards. Start with a stack and work your way down to just one. It seems a little awkward at first but really helps you smooth out the flick and get the motion right. Don't force it. Think about keeping it a smooth as you can. Its like swimming, you want to do as much as you can with the least amount of efforts. Also try to poke your paddle to the surface before you start the roll. The deeper your paddle the more effort it's going to take to get up. I almost poke it straight up beside the boat when I want to make sure its at the surface.
