We had a little of the old (a Whitesell) and the new (an Esquif Raven) on our trip last weekend. This run has a great Class 4 rapid called Troll's Teeth, on which I caught some people doing the last part. I also caught some people surfing and a little carnage on the last major rapid.

Was it the Whitesell or was it the paddler? From my perspective, I'd have to say the paddler. He's really, really good in an old school way. I loved his run on the last rapiid. (By the way, check at the size of the paddle blade he uses.)
As for the Raven, I don't know what to think about that boat yet. I tried it for a quarter mile or so and found it to be nothing special. It's stable, but gives up responsiveness to be that stable. Of course, I'm the guy who paddles the Prelude, so we know where my prejudices lie. But I love paddling with the longboat dudes like the guy in the Whitesell. They have years of experience on me and can make those boats look dam nimble.
