Greg- I too am a Truckee-based open-boater who is struggling with finding boats locally to demo. I'm considering taking a two-day OC-1 whitewater course up on the Klamath in the fall. I figure with the prevalence of kayaking being what it is in the sierra, demoing a w/w canoe locally would be an exercise in futility. BTW, have you had any success with demoing a boat?

Thanks!

First off, this forum has a wealth of knowledge, and has been tremendously informative (I've been reading, but hadn't registered until now).
I have much outdoors and athletic experience and am in good shape, but I don't have much paddling experience. I've done my share of flat water canoeing, ocean kayaking, surfing, but I haven't had the chance to get in some whitewater beyond family/friends rafting trips, and taking some old town recreation kayaks through some class IIs (I actually got one to surf sideways actually).

You could grab up a used coleman to do the kind of trips u describe. U starting from square one...it will get u out on the water quickly and having experiences.
Do that for a while, and research an try out more specialized boats.
It will suck to camp out of a short modern whitewater canoe on easy water. A cheaper big boat will be more fun immediately, allowing u to gain boating experience too. Plus if u crush the coleman up learning, grab up another. fun is what will keep you going.
