Caption beam question

Post by Ed »

I have a Caption that was tucked in to a beam width of 27 inches by the previous owner and it seems to have less stability than others I've paddled. I redrilled the thwarts and moved it to 28 inches, but I'd need new thwarts to get it wider. I think it looks better but I haven't had a chance to paddle it yet. How wide should a solo caption be and how much difference would a couple more inches make in stability?

Caption Beam Width

Post by dixie_boater »

My Caption has a 28 3/4" beam width ( outside to outside). The gunnels are vinyl. It came from the factory set at that width. I paddle it solo and find it to be very stable. I wouldn't set your boat any wider than 28 3/4" as it won't be any more stable.

Thanks for the info. I thought the factory set beam might have been wider.
