I also like the same paddle length regardless of saddle height.

Saddle height is one thing, but going from the stern of a tandem, to solo, to C-1, I tend to use shorter paddles - for me, the smaller the boat, the shorter my paddle. So, if I cut a paddle for OC-1 and it feels short, I could always use it C-1.

The Werner Nantahala paddle has a fiberglass shaft so the T-grip is most likely epoxied in place. No amount of heat is going to loosen the T-grip. The best solution is to cut the shaft just below the T-grip then using a 1/4 inch wide chisel remove the remnants of the old shaft from inside the T-grip. After shortening the shaft to the desired length you can epoxy the T-grip back onto the shaft.

That's the way that I shortened a couple of my Mitchell paddles. Heating the T-grip with boiling water only works if the T-grip is attached with glue instead of epoxy.
