poster or lurker?

Post by Craig Smerda »

just curious?

How many times did people check this site out before they ever posted or replied?

Has logging on affected this site?

Why do folks have aliases on message boards (except "butch" Cleary and Alden "meatcleaver" Bird... huh huh!) but not always in real life?

signing off!

Poster or Lurker

Post by billcanoes »

Alias' are for the Lurkers.

As if no one knows I'm Bill Reap here, but on our local paddling board I had been listed as Bill Reap, and I've signed lots of stuff that way too. Anyway, I posted I was leaving for two weeks and the night before I left at 2:30 in the morning a car with 6' racks pulled in our driveway and apparently turned their lights off. Anyway, our dog was going nuts, but we have a raccoon that comes by and I was tired so I stayed in bed. Anne lets our dog out after 15 min and the car pulls out which is also a dark colored subaru. (with a wide rack, so it looked like mine) she yells they're stealing your car so I grab my gun and my wifes keys) ready for pursuit. and my car is blocking the van in. Anyway, I'm not sure what they were doing, but I can only assume it wasn't good. I always wonder a little who is lurking to see what people are doing. The people who I've met who post have all been nice, but you gotta wonder about the lurkers.

boatin

I personally think of the West Wing episode in which Sam Seaborne slams open a door and says, "Guys, when I write something, I sign my name to it" and then writes a huge note that says, "You're fired - Sam Seaborne."

I figure, if I keep it consistent, maybe some day I'll be able to do what Sam did . . . like when I fire everyone else at Drakkar except for me and Marko . . .

Bill -

That wasn't me, when I came by to "pick up" a wheelboy, I was driving my truck

I don't lurk here, though some might wish I did! I mostly lurk on BoaterTalk to keep an eye on the kayakers.

As for aliases, anonymity changes the discussion, sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. Of course, many aliases aren't anonymous to the members of a community but are to the casual observer. I usually put my name out there (it keeps me honest) but don't have much problem with those that go anon.

You know, KNeal - kneel - Neal...

...the kind of name you DO NOT yell out in a Catholic church

C y'all Saturday,

doh!
Louie

I always use an made up name

Post by Louie »

The problem is I better know by my made up name than I am by my real name. I never lurk I'd exploded if I couldn't say something. Please don't lurk on BT if you go to that site give them hades. people write me all the time and say thank you for givin the kayaker hades. for example " I can remember when canoers were the butt of jokes on here till Louie came along, we ain't ridening in the back of the bus no more".

Lurking

Post by Cone Bone »

I've been lurking and not posting lately because I haven't been paddling during the recent season. I just feel pathetic when I find myself writing about paddling if I haven't actually been paddling. That's my sad tale.

When I do post it shows my member name - Cone Bone - and my real name as part of my email address that is in my signature line. I actually thought about all this when I set my original member stuff up... and haven't thought much about it since.

I use PAC since those are my intials and I use that sign off at work a lot. Never really thought about since some times I sign my name and some times I don't.

However, there are times I have posted as a pseudonym here but Adam and a few others always knew it. 8) I know I miss another's pseudonym sign offs that use to get a smile out of me.

As for BT and canoes - I use to laugh at the crap they gave you Louie. Some of the posts just can't be taken too serious - although they are posted that way!
I still lurk there and still at times post there as well. Redirecting other to to the enlighten path of cboats.net (although this board now has a guru type rep when it comes to the single blade and even the yakers redirect now - and respect the knowledge base). Remeber todays hot Kayak is tomorrows deal for a C1.

Not to be mean or bad mouth our brothers in boating but only a few of the yakers truly get it.....never, ever, mess with the barge boaters! They might just run you over coming into the eddie! Open boaters know that look on kayker faces ---> :o !

On that note and in good fun and jesting - Things I have never seen:
- A kayak bump a raft out of the way! I've seen a lot of canoes do it!
- A kayak surf over a canoe! I have seen and done that in a canoe.
- A kayaker just get out of the boat and run away from some nasty juju going on - been there, done that! Looking back from the shore line I sure was darn happy I wasn't where the boat was!

Anyone else want to add to the list.

Oh and sincerely, Paul A. Cline (aka PAC)

Hey Paul, remember me running over Al & his OC on the Gauley  ? A butt boater may not be able to, but a C-1'er can! It was an accident & luckily he didn't get hurt. I was follwing him through upper mash when he disapeared :o When I went over the drop I found him :-? Sure is funny to think about it now

Post by chuck naill »

It was me at your house. I came to get that Hearn lefty you got before I did. I am now on plan C. :)

As far as Craig's question. I use the real name, it just sounds funny if you are new to it. Besides I have no time for lurking. 8)

too easy

Post by chuck naill »

Sounds too "easy" of a comment to not be from a lurker. Better take it "easy" around this man. Keep your wives, daughters and boats locked up.

Do easy waters run shallow?
