Just curious-----> has anyone converted a surf-specific kayak into a c-1 yet??? The WaveSport Flyer, Necky Spyder, Murky88, and many others look like they could be really cool on a fast wave but the narrow width, smallish cockpit and hefty price make me think it could be expensive thing to test.
Thoughts???

I've knocked around the idea of building a surfyak as a C-1. They don't give length/width specs on the site, but it looks like something that wouldn't be hard to modify as you build. The $ is low & you could build the cockpit the way you want it.

The box construction looks quite cool. The real surf kayaks look all narrow with closed knee position.
I placed quad fins on my Wheelboy and it was great on a wave. I think it is worth drilling holes if you have plastic one and love the ocean.
In near future i would look for 2 other boats.
1. the new c-1 boat from Drakkar the carburator (wavespecific)
or
2. or Corrans swallowtail

Squashtail looks a bit skinny and a touch short for a conversion... also the stern looks a little low for us... but?
Corran announced a new boat called the Thruster that looks a bit more promising for pure fast surfing as a c1 conversion.... hopefully wider and a touch longer. There are a bunch of good boats out there for playing in holes or small waves that can hop, pop & flop... some speed and carving ability would be nice to have in the quiver. Plastic would be good to have for longevity and I don't want a chopped up race boat... I will try to get some specs and info. from him.

Craig, I have a UFO predator which mega used to make but doesn't anymore. I don't think it, or any other surfboat I've seen, would make a good C1 conversion. Just get a kayak paddle and sit in it. That's what I do, it's amazingly easy and you get to roll in flatwater or push off the sand if need be, haha. Surf kayaking is awesome, I highly recommend it. Plus, you really do kind of need two blades I think. Definatly a worthwhile investment if you can go to the beach often.

I purchased a WaveSport Flyer earlier this year with the intention of converting it to c-1 but so far I've been having so much fun in it as a k1 that I haven't been able to bring myself to rip out the outfitting. I think it will go as a c1 but like all surf kayaks it is WAY narrow with the concave sidewall so it's gonna be super unstable in displacement mode. I think once it's on a wave it'll firm up just as it does in k1 mode. Wanna see a funny movie? Go to justfluid.com and to the news section, click on "Montreal Habitat 67 Surf Kayaking" and enjoy.
