OB,
Pick up "Thrill of the Paddle" by Mason and Scriver.
It's not video, but the photos and descriptions of pretty good, including discussions of the basic OC roll, solo and tandem, and variations and when you'd want to use them (i.e., coming under the back deck, hand roll, high brace, etc. - most of the variations are for when you'd be assisted by being in a hole).

book vandals
I borrowed "Thrill" from our library once (actually via inter library loan), and the copy that arrived was missing 3/4 of its pages. Someone had gone through and razor bladed out everything except the introduction and a few sections near the end. Grrr.
The pool down here has an observation window in the deep end that I've used to shoot underwater footage at roll sessions before. I just need someone to model the technique. If anyone wants to haul themselves and their OC or Cboat all the way to SE Ohio after the university starts its roll sessions again, I'll be glad to video you. Just be warned--there's nothing here to paddle that isn't flat and/or polluted.

Yough
Care to join a few of us at the Yough? this weekend- I've got a camera that takes video
OC rolling clip available
Hey all,
I rooted around my hard drive and came up with a movie clip that I snatched from somewhere in cyberland.
The OC roll shown in the clip has all of the necessary components of a successful roll set up. Whatever position the paddler gets into originally, moving to the position shown in the clip prior to the roll will result in a roll that has a fine chance of success.
I also like the clip because the paddler keeps his paddle shaft hand on his forehead during the working part of the roll. This is a rolling feature that I count on to keep my own shoulder healthy, especially when rolling an OC (heavier and slower to roll than my groove, for example )
I haven't cracked posting movies yet, so email me if you want a copy of the clip.

Why setup?
OB,
when you are upside down, the setup position is very helful to protect you
from injury. I deep, easy water, this might not be an issue...
However, when you find yourself being trashed in a big hole, it is very useful to "tuck in". That means tightening your abs and kissinf your front deck or airbag.
Also, being up-side down in very shallow creeks is not a good idea. If it happens though, you might not want to expose your face for too long.
Tuck in and when your chance comes, roll up quick.
Cheers, Jan

Rolling
I had never thought about the difference in support offerred by high-brace vs. low brace rolling, but I have thought about the shoulder consequences. High brace rolling in a C1 or OC1 puts a lot more strain on your shoulders. I don't think it's a big deal in a C1, but with the added difficulty and mass of rolling OC1, I think it's a real issue. When I was first learning to roll OC1, I realised I was rolling with a high brace (I had come from kayaking) - I stopped and intentionally "lost" my roll until I could get it right on the low brace. Now if someone can tell me how to do it without getting beat up in the shallow rocky rivers around here, I'd be psyched
Sandie, if you get back over this way again we can work on your roll. Just drop me a line Hope the new boat works out....I'm still waiting on the Fat Boy
Cheers

Rolling in snow
Hi Matt,
We are intending to come over between December and February. No plans yet so I don't know where will will be going exctly. H wants to play on the trains again but I want to try skiing or snow boarding this time (how hard can it be?).
I think working on my roll can wait until June though. I would hope to have some kind of roll to work with by then. I will probably do another 3-day course at Kanuschule too.
Sandie
(Hey! I'm not a small 'c' anymore im a 'C Boater' now)

Does anyone have any experience with the tandem open canoe roll? My partner and I have been trying to master it. So far we can do it if we both set up on the same side and do a low brace roll together. In practice the bow paddler would have to switch hands on the paddle which seems risky to do in whitewater and somewhat disorienting.
We have tried having the bow paddler not switch which ends with the bow paddler doing a cross forward stroke. This doesn't seem to work as well and puts a lot of stress on the bow paddlers shoulders. If anyone has done this successfully we would appreciate your help.

Tandem rolling
I've never tried tandem rolling myself, although I will try to dig out a video I took of some folks tandem rolling a couple of years ago. There is also video of Mike Yee and Andrew Stohlquist (I think that's who Mik'es partner is) rolling in We Designed 'Em, plus a description in Thrill of the Paddle.
Hope that helps

Rolling in an afternoon...
Dude - see http://www.keelhauler.org/kh.htm, instruction section
OC-1 and C-1 Canoe Rolling – Stow, Ohio area
If you are interested in learning a C-1 and/or OC-1 canoe roll
Call 330-688-4296 Shawn Reese or e-mail Shawn.Reese@interpaynet.com,
You must have your own equipment. The most important piece is outfitting. So plan on meeting to take a look at your outfitting and I can give recommendations for modifications . Then off to the pool!
Reach out to me and we can set something up.
Either now while it is warm and we can get you out on the rivers, or later after November.
Or - get someone to get out with you on the lake and bring you back up when you can't. Then you just keep at it until "bang" it happens.
I just lead a trip on the Lower Yuk at Ohiopyle, would have been perfect...

OC-2 Roll
Regarding the inquiry about an OC-2 roll: My roll experience is with decked C-2s not open boats, but I think that it might be helpful confirmation of the direction that you were headed in.
When my wife and I paddled C-2 slalom competitively, we were one of the few (perhaps only) C-2 slalom teams to roll with one member doing a cross-roll. We started out with my wife doing a cross roll in the stern (because I had a stronger canoe roll), but eventually switched to my doing a cross roll in the bow. Our reasoning was, like yours, that changing grips while upside down in current is not a good idea. However, if we had to do things all over again, I would go with one member switching sides. None of the other C-2 teams ever reported a difficulty with making the switch under water and the increased power and longevity of both paddlers doing full canoe rolls on the same side is definitely a plus, which I imagine would be even more important with open boats.

WRT the tandem roll.....
my very fav thing in all of boating is to flip with a newer person in the bow, dump them out and THEN roll back up. It is too much fun.
Actually, I did this once in Upper Mash on the Lower Gauley. Had to ram the boat up on some rocks to retrieve the bow paddler.
