Is anybody up for an open boat creeking clinic?

Post by ChrisKelly »

Leland Davis is doing creeking clinics again this year. He did a couple last year and the people who took them raved. They were kayakers but Leland was first an open boater and has done lots of open boat creeking.
I intend to take the clinic this spring but talked with Leland about the possibility of doing an open boat session. My question of him was whether the skill set was sufficientlyy different to warrant a seperate session. He seems to think that the length of the boat may be more relevant than kayak/canoe. But, there is certainly some stuff that is open canoe specific.
It is a two day class that works on those skills that are helpful with creeking moves. Last year they started on the Tellico Saturday and on Sunday went to the Watauga. Of course, choice of rivers is based upon the skill of the people and the water levels.

He likes to have about 6 people. Last year the cost was $200. Is anybody interested? Look here for more info.

I'm definately interested, but I'd be comfortable on class III or IV only. Definately NOT Wautauga-

If there are a bunch of class V boaters I wouldnt feel at all excluded not taking the class.

I might be interested if it was somewhere slightly farther north, like WV or so, and some friend of mine might be interested as well.

the river is not so much the issue as are the skills. I don't care much where I learn them and I can walk rapids with anybody.

What I was trying to determine is if we have sufficient interest to TRY to plan an open boat creeking clinic.

Squeaky, No, no dates yet.

Martin, Leland will do a regular Intro to Creeking clinic in WVa. Are you not interested in coming down to Tenn/Carolina for an open boat specific one?

Bill, Not to worry about difficulty. I think many of us are in a similar sitch. Besides, we will keep you in the backseat and lie to you about the river not being the Watauga. You won't even know it until the brink of Hydro. 8)

Chris, the problem is the distance, TN/NC are ~800 miles from Toronto, so it's at least a 14-15 hour drive including stops :o . Can't do that for a weekend clinic, and I won't find anyone to join me for that, however if it was further North (WV) it would cut my driving time down to half, and I might find others to join, so then it would be doable 8) .

Chris,

I'm looking forward to the clinic, assuming I don't have conflicts with any dates I'll be there. It seems like it's going to be a go.
