Good question!

A little bit of both. My original intent was to just cut down the Maverick (you'll see that in the pictures on the Maven page). I quickly discarded the deck, then cut the hull down, then in half. At that point I would still consider it just cutting down someone elses design. However, I then started filling and cutting more, and in the end there is no part of that old Maverick hull (shape-wise) that is in the boat, BUT it is the "structure" upon which the Maven was built. Next time I am either using wood strip construction for the plug or foam! It would be MUCH easier! I certainly wouldn't have gotten started without that old Maverick though (this will be fun and not too hard...just cut down this boat!... ). In then end, it was fun, and not too hard...but certainly took a lot longer that I had hoped or planned.
Keep the C!
