Broke the Nomad

Oh well, I guess I'm back in the club.
The Queen of Esquimalt broke today on Harris Creek. She did not sink though.
I guess someone will get a cheap boat sometime soon and I'll have to find another one.

Jefe? Another Nomad 8.5? Large Diesel? Mamba? Large Solo?
What do you guys paddle these days on the steeps that also gets you through
a 5 day trip alright?

Hey, what happened to the Solo?

Pat, the small Mamba is too small. I'm 180. I already have a small Diesel as a low volume boat...

I actually welded the boat yesterday with a Friend. He had a broken Jefe and a broken Crux. We uses a gas powered glue gun and pushed plastic through. Then Roofing tape on the inside.
We paddled today and it seemed to work better than other welding I've done so far. We'll see how much longer I can beat the crap out of that boat. The good thing is: Once it's broken, I really don't care anymore!

hey will , you just might be on to something there:conversion feasability specialist. print up some cards. make some phone calls. manufacturers will be sending you hulls left and right....

I am impressed with the last weld on the Nomad.
My friend Braden bought a hot glue gun for about 30 bucks (one that runs on gas) and instead of glue, we pushed plastic through with a bolt....

So I drilled the ends of the crack and cut away the edges of the crack. Then slowly heated the boat up with a heat gun until the plastic was shiny. We then welded with the glue gun using plastic from the cockpit rim. Both, from the outside and from the inside. This, I think is pretty close to a professional welding job. It worked really well.

So far, the boat survived 4 pretty full on days on class 4 to 5 . Yesterday, I paddled a new creek in it and it was awesome. If there would be a gold medal in boulder bashing, we would have won it yesterday. I landed several 10 footers onto rocks, the boat got jammed inbetween boulders, I squeezed it into tight slots, I pinned about a trillion times. We did that for 6 solid hours and i gotta say I rarely abused my boat that bad. It still does not leak. Sweet.

Wow. That's some kind of inspired paddling. I will never know how well any of my boats/repairs stand up to that sort of abuse!

jan, i know you hate pyranhas but....
i here pyranha's got a new river runner, the Burn, sounds like the h3 is evolving a bit. haven't seen any pics, but i heard from a guy who knows a guy that heard from some pro guy that it's a sweet boat. they should be showing up any day....

the more i see the jefe the less i want one. seems like it'd be hard to drive that thing with all that rocker in front. what do you think?

Hey Larry,

to me, the Jefe looks really good. I just can't afford one right now.
I like a good amount of bow rocker because it makes it easy to ride the bow up on features. As a Kayak it feels pretty fast but not as fast as the big Nomad. However, it does not seem to get stuck on lines. Also, it punches and resurfaces really nice.

Not sure about the plastic. A friend just broke his PORTAING. It slipped out of his hand onto a rock and cracked. I have to admit that is was well below zero that day though. The crack was one of the biggest cracks I have seen though. It was really wide, almost as if the boat had been under stress and ripped open.

If they can make a good price, I try to get a fluid solo for the summer, I think.
