3/25/06 The 39th Annual Red Moshannon Down River Race

Post by scobotin »

Hey folks,

Its that time of year again. As always, the Red Mo Race is the last Saturday in March and starts proptly at 12:00 PM. The Red Mo Race is located outside of State College near the town of Grassflat, PA on, of course, the Red Moshannon River. It is classic for the Pennsylvania boating community and sort of kicks of the fair weather paddling season. The event is more fun than serious, however there are always a few fast, maybe olympic caliber boaters there. The race is mainly open canoes, but is open to all types of paddlers. There is free camping located at the take out, where the river flows underneath PA Route 53. The race is run by Tussey Mountain Outfitters in Bellefonte, PA. You can get more info by contacting Ed at TMO @ (814) 355-5690. Also, there is a great little class 3 creek we like to run on Friday and Sunday, weather permitting, called the Black Moshannon. Hope to see you all there.

For those who want to feel out their competition, the following link is last year's race results:

Red Mo

Absotively, posolutely. The Red Mo is a plenty good time, and the Black Moshannon is a must. It's a beautiful, central PA creek, and thats a good thing, cuz ya certainly need somethin easy on the senses nursing the post party hangover.
The race too is really entertaining, with serious racers lined up next to boats that stop and cook hamburgers during. This get together has tons of character. This is not your grandmother's limp AW festival.
Its cool to see so many openboats on one run.

Now there's a blast from the past! I don't think that I've run the Red Mo race since 1980 or '81. Actually, I probably haven't paddled on either the Red Mo or the Black Mo since not long after that. A big howdy to all those out in Nittany Lion territory!
