wanted : section of vinyl gunwale

Post by sbroam »

I'm fixing up a couple of old canoes, one of which has a section of gunwale busted up. Rather than replace the whole thing, which could get expensive (shipping on a 16' piece if plastic/aluminum ain't cheap, but I am!) , or replacing the whole kit and caboodle with locally available ash (silk purse, sows ear), I'm going to try to replace just that bit. I don't know how much variation there is between different manufacturer's gunwales, but I can measure what I have when I get home. I'm planning to rivet some aluminum angle under the inner and outer lips, extending a foot or more each side of where the old and new meet.

The boat is a Mohawk Intrepid and I need about 4' of gunwale.

Got gunwale?

two gunwales from an Esquif Detonator..... I don't know if you can use them or not. They are probably different shape that you need. But maybe you can check them out somewhere... I have no idea why I kept them around.

Measurements and a sketch :

That's about 1 13/16" wide and I need about 4' of gunwale - I want to replace frome the damage all the way to the end.

Thanks!

bump.

It seems like Mohawk used the same gunwales on all their boats. If you have a wrecked Mohawk, one you chopped to win that big rodeo back in the day, or if you replaced them with wood and you still have 4' or so lying around, please let me know.

Dang it! I had a sorry old Viper 12 that used to belong to some guy in Columbia, SC. It was blue, then more blue, then red, then some patches of white abs, then lots and lots and lots of glass, epoxy, JB Weld, and several adhesives that I can't identify. I pulled the old gunwales off, offered 'em here for free, and eventually took them to the dump. It would have been great to send them back to their original owner. By the way, squeeky's cool rodeo chop Whitesell has inspired me to finish my plan of chopping the Viper 12. It looks like I'll have between 9'8 and 10' of sound boat, lots of rocker, and about 26" of width.

I know, some of those materials were of an experimental and classified nature - I hope you have taken proper HazMat precautions while handling them! Make sure that you never leave the boat near a strong neutron or gamma source - I cannot predict the results...

Oh well, I wasn't looking for gunwales when you were parting it out!
