North Branch Armada April 27-29th 2007 Roll Call

I'm sleeping in "Casa de Tacoma" as usual so the side of the road is fine as is the Savage.
I believe Marshall and I will be skipping the Yough and PS this year and heading straight to the Cheat to run the whole Narrows section. I'll try to set it up so we meet up with y'all at Facination Alley for some entertainment..
If it works out, I may be taking the raft down the NBP on Saturday with a couple of folks and prolly throw the Wheelboy in it to get some play in at lunchstop.
Coastals is having our 1/4ly meeting there that weekend so I will be there regardless.

I take it the Coastals folks will keep staying at Chez Savage as well?

It really is too bad there aren't any campgrounds opening up in time. I could care less about where we stay (and liked the Savage scenery), but I DID like the thought that staying at the campground raised their tourist numbers for boaters, and could be used to keep access open for locals and out of towners a like. I know when we go through the process every few years for releases one of the things they look at is trying to quantify how many tourist $ it is bringing in....

Baby wipes do wonders, too. Our kids are both out of diapers now, but we still keep ziplocs full of wipes in both vehicles. Have used them many times when a lunchtime MTB ride ran long.

For the record, I'm okay with either camp location. I plan on paddling the Yough, so I guess I can just find out then where I'm supposed to camp that morning, though it'd be nice to have advance warning.

Will the Savage location fill up if there's a big club using it as their HQ?

Sounds like the NB is going to be crowded this year. Or have I just caught it on uncrowded days in the past?

What time are y'all planning on putting on for the Narrows? I'm not a squirt boater, so I'd just as soon catch the entire run and stop at the mystery spot to watch (am I right that the Cquirtists will be putting in below Calamity for park and sink?).

It's a short run, so you probably don't have to put on too early.

Two of us will be coming from Indiana to run the loop and then the narrows, so Ohio boater, lets talk, maybe we could pick you up then meet with squekyknees (shado@dcwi.com)
Is anyone going to paddle Sunday
Martin could you bring your Pyrannah for me to try, depending on your outfitting, I'm 5'6" with thick thighs Does it have the bulkhead?

Doug, the Kitzmiller section will most likely not be running, as it is above the Dam and does not have releases, but relies on natural flow. The only section of the NBP that has a guaranteed flow that weekend is the one the Armada is on.

I will throw the Pyranha Prelude on the roof for you to try.It does, like all Preludes have a bulkhead outfitting, although with an additional lap-belt. Fit might be an issue for you, as I am ~ 6'2", with long (36"inseam) and skinny legs.

Nothing wrong with camping there--it's about a 30+ min. drive to the Bloomington section and Westernport (site of the infamous armada assault on Fox's Pizza

). See if you can grab somebody to go there with you. Personally, I prefer the convenience of Savage campground area and being by that river over a hot shower (tough decision to make, though

).

Bloomington section is the traditional site for the Spring Armadas, mostly because it's lower class rapids (1-2 with one class 3+) and having scheduled dam(ned) releases (easiest to set a weekend armada).

Sunday paddling has become anyone's choice. We wake up Sunday morning and whoever feels like boating sets their place and goes.

Not sure about the time, prolly around 12-12:30 to set shuttle at the takeout( prolly just below Calamity unless there is more to run below there. PM me and I'll hook ya up with my #.

Looks like Kitzmiller was running this weekend, we might be lucky and get some water in it for the end of the month, if so, Squeak and I may check it out.

There are two fun rapids between Calamity and the Pringle Run takeout. Neither is difficult - both are just long wavetrains with a hole lurking near the bottom. But the waves are BIG and bouncy - sort of like the stuff you find down in the canyon section. If I remember right, you can probably run from Calamity to the takeout in maybe 20 minutes if you don't stop, so it's no big hardship to do the whole run.

I'll plan on meeting up with people at the Yough on Friday and figuring things out from there. Anyone wants my cell number, just PM me.

it is to show up by noon Saturday at the putin for the North Branch of the Potomac, boat, let other peeps paddle my boat, paddle other peeps' boats, eat, drink and be merry Saturday evening and boat on Sunday wherever I dam please with whomever I dam please.

I think I will not be there for Friday and the Cheat Narrows run. Sooooo, I'd kind of like to run the Cheat, (Narrows or Canyon, either works) on Sunday.

Any takers for a Sunday Cheat run? If I am pooping in the punchbowl here and there is another Sunday plan I herby withdraw the Sunday Cheat suggestion.

And, do I understand my job description?

Please note that due to lack of enough interest, there will NOT be an Armada T-shirt as planned (we needed 15 for a group purchase, I would have gone with 12 and "ate" the remainder, but we only had 7 "sold".

I'll try and do a better job next year of promoting them.
